Martha STephens

Dr. Martha Stephens, born in rural Dye County, Tennessee in 1939, retired in 1996 from a 30-year practice of psychiatry n Michigan and Tennessee after returning to Memphis in 1994. She has been making and studying art since.

Many sources of inspiration have been found from worldwide ravels to backyard gardening efforts. With the major goal of capturing some aspect of the mystery and beauty in nature, water based media have been her focus. She has bene exploring the medium of collage, especially as a vehicle for portraying fantasy. Of special interest is the process of understanding emotions expressed and emotions provoked for both artist and viewer of art.

She has studied extensively via continuing education university courses and various workshops. Since beginning exhibition of her works in 2000, she has won a number of juried awards, including "Best of Show", First Show After 55, Arts in the Park, Memphis. Collectors of her art include Starbucks Corporation and private individuals. She is an active member of the Memphis/Germantown Art League and Artists' Link and also serves on the Wings Cancer Foundation art gallery committee..
